Conservation Ontario’s submission to the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change on the “Ontario Cap and Trade Program: Offsets Credits Regulatory Proposal” (EBR# 012-9078). Overall, Conservation Ontario supports offsets provisions that are developed to allow for robust, “high quality” offset credits, with integrity, transparency and financial value within Ontario’s Cap and Trade program. It was encouraged that the Province should engage CO and CAs in the development of proposed offset protocols (ie. urban forestry, forest projects, tree planting, grasslands and agriculture) while also considering maintenance and enhancement of ecological integrity and biodiversity of natural systems. Conservation Ontario also wishes to engage with the Province and other stakeholders in the proposed working group to provide advice and help identify the best means to foster voluntary reductions and removals of greenhouse gases.
